Formula 1 travels to Monza this weekend for the Italian Grand Prix. Said by many to be one of the most intense fan experiences on the F1 calendar, Monza often produces exciting races for TV viewers as well. McLaren Honda goes into this weekend with a rather bleak outlook despite new upgrades to its internal combustion engine (
ICE
). Poor energy recovery system (
ERS
) performance will not allow McLaren Honda’s package to be very competitive on this straight, fast circuit which requires full
ERS
deployment but has somewhat limited regen. opportunities.
Elsewhere on the grid we can expect a podium battle between Mercedes and Ferrari. Mercedes may have the best overall package but it’s possible Ferrari has a slight
ICE
power advantage. Couple that with this being Ferrari’s home Grand Prix and we can expect a real fight to the finish.
