The British Grand Prix, pride of the Formula 1 calendar for many teams as it represents their home race and the heart of their fan base. Built in 1943 as a Royal Air Force bomber station, Silverstone’s three original runways now hold some of F1’s most famous features: the Hangar Straight, Copse, Maggots and Becketts making it a genuine drivers’ favorite. 2019 brings a new track surface for the second time in two years (the circuit needed this for Moto GP compliance) and a freshly signed deal for Silverstone to host the event until 2024.
There can be no question that Red Bull is riding a high entering the British Grand Prix weekend coming off of their first win of 2019 and Honda’s first win in 13 years. Traditionally, Silvestone is not a circuit that is favorable to Red Bull’s package but if there’s something to be said for momentum, they surely have a shot at a podium under the right circumstances. Toro Rosso should be set up to have one car in the points, maybe two if something odd happens.
Elsewhere on the grid, with lower elevation and lower temperatures than Austria, we must expect that Mercedes will return to its winning ways. Ferrari may have an advantage in high-speed corners, which Silverstone has plenty of, so we should expect a good battle with Mercedes for the podium. Best-of-the-rest honors might just belong to McLaren! Expect a Renault to give them a challenge. From there an Alfa Romeo should be behind the Renault with a Racing Point fighting them. Based on recent race performances Haas looks set to struggle as they have massive problems with the Pirelli tires, still if they get it right they have massive upside potential. Williams will wind up at the back of the order.
