Built on a man-made island, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve first hosted the Canadian Grand Prix in 1978 (where Gilles Villeneuve took the win). Known for its power-hungry long straights and sharp turns, the circuit is a favorite of drivers and fans alike.
McLaren Honda enter the weekend in a very tenuous spot: down on power, struggling with reliability, and are reportedly delaying a planned upgrade that could help their fortunes. At a circuit like this, points are almost certainly out-of-the-question; bringing both cars across the finish line on lap 70 may be the best the team can hope for.
Elsewhere on the grid, it’s anybody’s guess whether Mercedes or Ferrari will prevail but, perhaps for the first time in the V6 turbo era, we can say the scale might be tipping Ferrari’s way. Red Bull probably won’t fare as well with their Renault Power Unit being slightly down on power. Force India, Williams, and perhaps Haas, all with more horsepower than the Renault, will look to capitalize on this. Sauber will almost surely struggle with their 2016 spec. Power Unit.
