Monaco. That one word evokes thoughts of pomp, circumstance, spectacle, and great racing in the minds of Formula 1 fans and drivers alike. And that’s where F1 will be this weekend, racing on the shortest track of the year and one that has seen Formula 1 Grands Prix every year since 1955.
This is a particularly interesting weekend for McLaren Honda as not only does this represent their best odds of the season to-date, Jenson Button will make his F1 return as he sits in for Fernando Alonso who will campaign the Indy 500. This will also mark Jenson’s 306th Grand Prix start which will bring him even with the great Michael Schumacher. Although Monaco is not as much of a power-dependent track, both the team and fans will have to wait until the Canadian Grand Prix for a significant engine update.
Elsewhere on the grid, in Monaco it is not so cut-and-dry to say that Mercedes is the favorite even if they are. Ferrari thinks 2017 will be the end of a 16 year win-less streak at Monaco. Red Bull is counting on its chassis design prowess to jump ahead of their usual spots on the grid on this power-insensitive circuit. The rest is anyone’s guess as Williams, Haas, Renault and Torro Rosso mix it up in the middle. One thing’s for sure: anything can happen at Monaco.
