A favorite of drivers and fans alike, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with its power-hungry long straights hosts the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. McLaren Honda enter the weekend expecting a challenging go of it because, while their power unit has improved significantly since last year, it consumes a lot of fuel relative to the field (much of which will be debuting various upgrades this weekend). McLaren Honda’s answer to this is a new turbo which is designed to improve energy harvesting (thus deployment) and a new fuel from Exxon/Mobil which is said to be worth up to .1s per lap by itself. With these things the team is still targeting points for both cars.
Elsewhere on the grid things are getting quite interesting. All eyes are on Red Bull as they use Renault’s upgraded engine along with their superior chassis to take the fight directly to Mercedes as they have been for the past two grands prix. Also noteworthy is Ferrari who will be introducing a new spec. turbo this weekend. If these two teams can’t beat Mercedes outright, their goal is certainly to push them into reliability issues. Between the various hardware upgrades and drivers like Hamilton, Ricciardo, and Vettel who have a score to settle this promises to be an incredible race.
