For the second year Formula 1 returns to Sochi for the Russian Grand prix. The Tilke-designed circuit set in Sochi’s Olympic park debuted in 2014 to much fanfare but produced what many regarded as a boring race. This year Pirelli has chosen more aggressive tire compounds to decrease lap times and increase pit stops in hope to make a more exciting race.
More of the same can be expected from McLaren Honda as they are stuck with a flawed
ERS
system until they can make substantial changes over the winter. The MP4-30s should be able to finish in the 11-14th place range based on their own merits. That said, a late upgrade from Honda will see its remaining four development tokens spent on improving combustion, exhaust, a new turbo, and new
MGU-H
which will be fitted to Alonso’s car only.
Elsewhere on the grid we can also expect more of the same from Mercedes as their domination continues. Ferrari and Williams should be fighting for the final spot on the podium with Red Bull just behind them.
