The British Grand Prix, the pride of the Formula 1 calendar for many teams as it represents their home race and the heart of their fan base. Built in 1942 as a Royal Air Force bomber station, Silverstone’s three original runways now hold some of F1’s most famous features: the Hangar Straight, Abbey, Copse, Maggots and Becketts making it a genuine drivers’ favorite and one of the most challenging circuits for car setup because the combination of straights and turns demand both low drag and high downforce. This weekend will mark the debut of F1’s trial of sprint race qualifying. The standard knock-out qualifying format will take place on Friday and set the grid for the sprint race. On Saturday there will be a 30 minute (100km) sprint race which will set the grid for the Grand Prix. The other variable this weekend will be a new, more durable rear tire from Pirelli.
Red Bull enter the British Grand Prix weekend with confidence and a lead in both championships for the first time in the V6 turbo hybrid era. Nonetheless they know they must continue to work hard to keep Mercedes at bay. Look for one car on the podium and that one spot could be the win. AlphaTauri should be set up to have one car in the points, perhaps two if something odd happens.
Elsewhere on the grid, not accustomed to be outdone, Mercedes is slated to bring an upgrade package in a bid to return to their winning ways. Will it be enough? Following the lead pack will be one of the McLarens. From here, let’s if one of the Ferraris can get and hang onto a good qualifying position despite the prediction Silverstone would be tough for them. Next look for a battle between Alpine and Aston Martin. At this point we’ll see some team cars from the previously mentioned teams. In the second half of the finishing order look for one of the Williams cars to be fighting to stay ahead of of the Alfa Romeo runners. Last we can expect to see the Haas duo.
