The British Grand Prix, the pride of the Formula 1 calendar for many teams as it represents their home race and the heart of their fan base despite fans not being in attendance this year. Built in 1942 as a Royal Air Force bomber station, Silverstone’s three original runways now hold some of F1’s most famous features: the Hangar Straight, Abbey, Copse, Maggots and Becketts making it a genuine drivers’ favorite and one of the most challenging circuits for car setup because the combination of straights and turns demand both low drag and high downforce. Dubbed the '70th Anniversary Grand Prix’ the second of the two Grands Prix will mark 70 years of the Formula 1 World Championship, which was inaugurated at Silverstone in May 1950.
Red Bull enter the weekend not entirely sure what to expect. While the team has managed a decent points haul in the first grands prix, the pace of their car is not what they expected after winter testing and it remains to be seen whether they have a full understanding of why and how to fix it. Expect a low podium position from one car and for them to be quite a distance back from the leader. AlphaTauri should be set up to have one car in the points, perhaps two if something odd happens.
Elsewhere on the grid, there can be no other conclusion drawn going into the event other than complete Mercedes domination and what could be Lewis Hamilton’s 7th and 8th British Grand Prix win. Once again we find ourselves considering Racing Point as a contender not only for best-of-the-rest but possibly to mix it up with the top teams. From here, expect Ferrari and McLaren to be fighting hard for the remaining high points-paying positions. Following those two we can expect a Renault slot comfortably in to the mid field. With an outside shot at picking up the final point we find Haas and Alfa Romeo duking it out. Williams continue to progress but the question remains whether they have enough pace and luck to score their first point, even so one of their cars should round out the order.
